are you struggling to achieve your health and fitness goals?

Most people start their health and fitness journeys motivated and eager to get started. People understand more than ever the importance of living a healthy lifestyle and how this can impact their quality of life, confidence, mental health and wellness as well as longevity.

Unfortunately, most people are not able to sustain this lifestyle. They turn up to the gym every week but see little or no results, performing ineffective workouts, that are not suitable for their goals or experience level, and end up tired, burnt out, and unmotivated. Finally, they give up, or move on to the next best fitness method or diet that will finally work for them!

Working with a coach can help simplify your health and fitness journey and cut through the confusion you may be feeling especially in regards to fitness and nutrition. By focusing on what really matters coaching will teach you the fundamental big-picture principles that need to be in place so you can achieve your health and fitness goals in a healthy and sustainable way.

am i the right coach for you? and other FAQs

I enjoy working with anyone serious about improving their overall fitness, body composition, and health and is focused on self-improvement in general. To achieve truly outstanding results individuals will need to focus on the things they are doing outside of the gym, as well as what they are doing in the gym when they exercise. Most people will need to address important lifestyle factors to achieve their goals, build healthy habits, and address the things that are likely preventing them from achieving their goals. This is where coaching comes in, and is different from simply meeting up with a personal trainer a few times a week in a public gym. If you are serious about self-improvement and are eager to learn I would love to hear from you, no matter what your experience level is. If you are just looking for a quick fix or someone to shout at you in the gym I may not be the best fit for you.

Programme design and exercise selection should be bespoke to the individual. This is the advantage of working with a coach, rather than simply following a cookie-cutter programme that may or may not be suitable for you or your goals. Designing a programme based on an individual’s current ability, experience, and current lifestyle as well as testing things out and making adjustments based on results is part of the coaching process. With that said the foundation of any good programme will be resistance training, due to the numerous benefits it provides. These benefits include far more than the commonly understood things such as increased muscle mass, strength, and performance, they also include many health benefits. It is now understood that building and retaining muscle especially as we age plays an important role in longevity. This does not mean we all need to train like a bodybuilder, however, almost everyone should be performing at least some kind of resistance training regularly. Of course, we should also be performing at least some kind of cardiovascular work, more so from a health perspective rather than simply for fat-loss which is not always necessary. Performing the right type of cardio in the right amounts is also important, and more is not always better.

Absolutely, it is never too late to start building resistance training into your fitness lifestyle and start receiving all the benefits in terms of how you look, feel, and perform. Beginners can make incredible progress in a short amount of time, and learning proper exercise form and execution is vital at this stage. In fact this is one of the best times to work with a coach.

I coach my clients using what is known as hybrid coaching or personal training. This is simply a combination of traditional personal training where I meet up with a client and online training where the client trains on their own. However, a client will still be following my program and recording their exercises in their fitness app, allowing me to monitor their progress. They can also send me videos of their exercise form and receive feedback. You can learn more about coaching here.

Yes, you will need a gym membership for when you are training on your own, unless you are lucky enough to have a home gym. For in-person coaching I use my fitness studio in Whitstable to train clients.

In-person coaching is the traditional form of personal training and is how most people think of personal training. The benefit of this model is that a coach can ensure proper exercise form and execution, as well as safety. Many people also feel they need a coach there to motivate them and push them hard. The downside of traditional personal training is the lack of flexibility for when you want to train and the higher prices. In recent years online coaching has exploded and offers other benefits to clients, such as increased flexibility to train when they want to and greater value. Luckily with the advances in technology coaches can manage their online clients more easily than ever, and clients have everything they need right there on their smartphones. I coach my clients using a hybrid method, combining in-person coaching with online training. The best of both worlds.

My focus is on teaching my clients how to build their own nutrition plan, based on their individual goals, personal preferences, and lifestyle. In general, I recommend a flexible dieting approach to nutrition and will set macronutrient targets for a client to aim for each day. However, depending on a client this is not always the case. Sometimes we will simply focus on building healthy eating habits first, working on one thing at a time before moving on to more advanced methods such as tracking macronutrients. With that said I can provide example meal plans if desired which hit certain macronutrient targets based on the goals of a client. Macronutrient targets, meal plans, and food tracking are all available in the training app, allowing me to see your food diary and make adjustments over time.

The results a person can expect to achieve will depend greatly on their adherence to their training program as well as their nutrition and lifestyle choices. Factors such as their level of advancement, as well as exercise and diet history, will also play a role. I will always give my clients realistic expectations as to what can be achieved. However, we will always be looking to achieve steady progress with measurable results in things such fat loss, building muscle, and gaining strength as well as general fitness.

Essentially yes, although I think of coaching as a more complete service. To achieve the best results most people will need to learn new skills outside of the gym and build lifestyle habits that are in alignment with their fitness goals. Coaching should focus on education, delivering the knowledge a client needs allowing them to progress in their health and fitness journey on their own eventually.
